Roma Women concluded their Serie A Femminile campaign with a 2-2 draw against Napoli on Saturday.
In a dramatic game, Elena Linari put Roma ahead in the first half before Lindsey Thomas doubled the lead after the break. But Napoli pulled one back shortly after and equalised through a penalty late on.
Roma had a chance to regain the advantage with a penalty of their own in stoppage time, but Manuela Giugliano’s effort was saved.
It means Roma slipped to a fifth-placed finish, as Fiorentina overtook them, while Napoli stayed up thanks to their late equaliser and penalty save.
Roma will now head into next week’s Coppa Italia final on a five-match winless streak. Another concern will be the condition of Annamaria Serturini, who was stretchered off shortly after coming on as a substitute.
Here’s how coach Betty Bavagnoli reacted to the draw.
On Napoli making things tricky
“We faced a team that did everything to put us in difficulty. Credit to them for having gained an important draw, even if we helped it a lot.”
On letting the opponents back into it
“It is a game that we kept under control and we could have won without too many worries. In the second half, Napoli raised the pressure, re-opened the result and in the end the incidents determined the result.”
On not making the most of chances
“We are saddened for not having used the final penalty and for having gifted the draw. The team played a good game, we should have been more cynical.”
On getting back on track for the cup final
“Now a final awaits us, the most important moment of the season. We need to recharge our energy.”
