Roma Women v Tavagnacco preview: Golden Girl Greggi hoping to reclaim starting berth

Roma Women are looking to bounce back from successive defeats when they take on Tavagnacco on Sunday.

For the first time since March, Betty Bavagnoli’s side have suffered back-to-back losses in Serie A, with first Florentia and then Juventus defeating them. Last week’s outing at Stadio Tre Fontane saw a 4-0 win for Juventus, so Roma will be hoping to avoid a similar fate in front of the same crowd.

Tavagnacco should give them the perfect opportunity to get back to winning ways. The Udine-based side are yet to win this season, and have lost their last five matches in a row – meaning they currently occupy a relegation spot. What’s more, they have only scored four goals all season – with the most recent coming all the way back at the start of November.

Roma cannot afford to underestimate any opponent, though, so Bavagnoli could select a strong lineup. It’s essential to get back to winning ways given that they are now five points behind the top two – while next week’s opponents, Inter Milan, are breathing down their necks, just one point behind.

One player who will be unavailable is key midfielder Manuela Giugliano, who suffered medial ligament damage against Juventus. Her absence means Vanessa Bernauer is likely to move back into a defensive midfield role, with the more advanced position potentially being taken by Giada Greggi. She has had a week to remember after being named the 2019 Golden Girl by Tuttosport – awarded to the best female Italian Under-21 player.

Starts have been harder to find for her this season, but this may be a golden opportunity for her to remind Bavagnoli what she can do.

Elsewhere, Kaja Erzen could start at right-back against her former club, having seen her place taken by Angelica Soffia against Juventus.

The game kicks off at 11:30am UK time.
