Roma Women v Sassuolo preview: Pugnali with point to prove upon Tre Fontane return

Roma Women will come up against a couple of familiar faces on Sunday afternoon, as Sassuolo visit the Stadio Tre Fontane.

It has been a bright start to the season for Roma’s new-look squad, with several summer additions impressing. However, tomorrow’s game will pit them against a pair of players who were part of their own setup last season, in Camilla Labate and Luisa Pugnali.

Young wide player Labate moved to the Neroverde along with striker Pugnali, with neither being regulars under Betty Bavagnoli last term. But Roma weren’t the only club Sassuolo raided for talent, with experienced Italy striker Daniela Sabatino moving from Milan. She has hit the ground running with three goals in four games, and will be the visitors’ main outlet.

Sassuolo’s only points this season have come on the road, with a draw at Bari and a win at Orobica, but they have struggled against stronger opposition, losing to Fiorentina and Juventus. With Roma boasting a three-game winning run which has seen them not even concede a goal, they will be looking to be the next big side to condemn Sassuolo to defeat.

Ahead of the game, Bavagnoli told Roma TV of how impressed she was with how her side were beginning to press with more intensity, a tactic she expects to see again on Sunday.

“The team arrives at this event with great awareness and a lot of work, we have prepared well and we are benefiting from these latest positive results that give morale and allow us to continue this important path of growth,” explained the coach.

“I am happy because I have noticed some improvements, like the determination to immediately start strong and to be aggressive. We are aware that we are well prepared.

“On Sunday I expect a strong, organised and determined opponent. Sassuolo is a team that has lost two games, but against teams like Juventus and Fiorentina. Also, important players arrived, one of whom was Daniela Sabatino, who does not need any introduction, but also Pugnali. They are players who have given so much quality to a team already well prepared.”

The game kicks off at 11:30am UK time on Sunday.
