Roma Women’s form in the 2024-25 Serie A Femminile season was unrecognisable for a team who had won the past two league titles back to back.
Roma relinquished their crown to Juventus this season, but it wasn’t so much by the new champions becoming better as it was by the defending champions becoming worse. In fact, Juventus finished with four fewer points than they got last season as well – and Roma were 11 points clear of them in last season’s final table.
Part of the shortfall can be attributed to Inter’s improvement, which led to Roma not even being able to finish second. But as the dominant force last season, Roma didn’t used to be swayed too much by how other teams were performing.
So, how exactly did their league form compare from being champions in 2023-24 to just reaching the minimum objective of Champions League qualification in 2024-25?
Points
2023-24: 70
2024-25: 45
There was an astonishing 25-point downturn compared to last season. In fact, Roma claimed more points in the regular season alone, before the Scudetto Pool, last season than in the whole of this season.
In the regular season, Roma claimed just 35 points, compared to 51 last season. In the Scudetto Pool, they earned 10 points after earning 19 last season.
As stated, the downfall was magnified when taking into account Juventus’ record too. Juventus won the league with 55 points, after finishing as runners up on 59 last season. It was the lowest tally required to win the league, excluding the curtailed 2019-20 season, since 2015-16 (when there were four fewer games in a season anyway). And in terms of points per game, the 2.12 that Juventus achieved was the lowest required to win the league title since 1994-95.
Roma’s points per game average was 1.73, their lowest since 1.68 in 2021-22.
Wins
2023-24: 23
2024-25: 13
Roma claimed their 13th win of the season on the final day against Fiorentina in May. For perspective, their 13th win last season came on the 14th matchday, in January.
This time around, Roma beat Como (twice), Napoli (twice), Milan, Sampdoria (twice), Fiorentina, Lazio and Juventus in the regular season. In the Scudetto Pool, they added just one win over Inter (thanks to a 95th-minute winner) and two over Fiorentina, who they consequently pipped to third place.
The only team Roma didn’t beat in the regular season was Sassuolo, whereas they beat everyone on their first meeting last season.
Draws
2023-24: 1
2024-25: 6
Of the 10 wins that Roma failed to match, half became draws and half became losses. In the regular season, there were draws against Lazio and Sassuolo (twice), despite neither of those sides finishing in the top five. Inter also held Roma to a point in October, and the last draw of the season was against Milan in May, in which Alessandro Spugna’s side sacrificed a three-goal lead.
Losses
2023-24: 2
2024-25: 7
Roma only lost twice last season and one of those was when they already had the title wrapped up. But this time around, they suffered their second defeat of the season by January. Juventus, Inter and Milan all overcame Roma once in the regular season, and again in the Scudetto Pool (twice in Juventus’ case). Roma’s widest losing margin was 3-0 to Inter during the Scudetto Pool, which ensured the opponents qualified for the Champions League for the first time.
Goals
2023-24: 74
2024-25: 49
Roma’s form at both ends of the pitch suffered this season. They weren’t as potent up front, scoring 25 fewer goals. There were a few factors this could be attributed to, but last season’s preferred front three of Valentina Giacinti, Evelyne Viens and Emilie Haavi rarely all started together this time around – just three times, in fact. Giacinti and Viens both scored just 6 goals after getting 12 and 13 respectively last season. Haavi, on the other hand, repeated her 3-goal tally. She was one of only three players whose goal tally didn’t decline, along with Lucia Di Guglielmo (4 each time) and Manuela Giugliano (from 10 to 12). Giugliano was in fact the only player who reached double figures this time. And of the new signings Roma added, no player scored more than twice (Marta Pandini and the returning Alice Corelli).
Similarly, the only players to avoid a drop in their number of assists were Viens (6 each time), Giada Greggi (from 1 to 4 – despite missing all but one game of the Scudetto Pool through injury) and Moeka Minami (from 0 to 1), as well as Sanne Troelsgaard (from 1 to 2) and Alayah Pilgrim (from 0 to 1) who only joined midway through last season anyway.
Goals Against
2023-24: 24
2024-25: 36
It’s arguably been even more alarming at the other end of the pitch, with Roma losing some resilience in defence and big questions being asked about their goalkeeping options.
Roma conceded 12 more goals this season than last. Usual starting keeper Camelia Ceasar let in 25 goals from 19 games, compared to 21 from the same number of appearances last season. Furthermore, last season’s backup keepers – Tinja-Riikka Korpela and Stephanie Öhrström – let in 3 goals from 8 games between them. This season, emergency signing Isabella Kresche conceded 11 from 8 in Ceasar’s absence.
Collectively, there were only 4 clean sheets this season, compared to 13 last time.
Goal Difference
2023-24: +50
2024-25: +13
All in all, it saw Roma’s goal difference drop from +50, which had been their best ever, last season to +13. That was their lowest goal difference since the 2020-21 season (+10).
When the statistics across the board decline in this manner, it’s no surprise Roma were caught in the title race, but they did claim the Supercoppa Italiana title and have the Coppa Italia final to look forward to.
