Stephan El Shaarawy is not the only player to have scored a brace for Roma and lost the game in which he did it.
Here’s a summary of the times it has happened involving other players since 2000.
Stephan El Shaarawy v Bologna (10th November 2024)
Roma went into their Serie A match against Bologna in November 2024 unofficially knowing it would be the last with Ivan Juric in charge. The imminent second sacking of a head coach in the season led to scrutiny on some of the team’s longer-serving players, but one of them was responsible for the last two goals of Juric’s mini-reign.
El Shaarawy headed home a cross to equalise for Roma, before Bologna pulled away again into a 3-1 lead. With eight minutes left, El Shaarawy – having switched from left to right wing-back – smashed home what would be a consolation goal and the last of the game.
It was El Shaarawy’s first brace for Roma since November 2018; in other words, the first of his second spell with the club. Meanwhile, Juric was sacked half an hour after the full-time whistle.
Erik Lamela v Udinese (28th October 2012)
Before El Shaarawy’s brace in a loss, it had been 12 years since something similar had happened for Roma. On that occasion, in October 2012, Erik Lamela scored in the 22nd and 24th minutes to put Roma two goals to the good at home to Udinese.
However, Zdenek Zeman’s side found their lead chipped away by the 50th minute, and in the 88th, Antonio Di Natale scored a penalty to win it for the visitors.
Francesco Totti v Cagliari (20th May 2007)
Going into the penultimate day of the 2006-07 Serie A season, Roma already knew they would be finishing second. Their last away day of the campaign would culminate in defeat on Sardinia, though.
Roma fell behind in the 13th minute before a Francesco Totti penalty just before the half-hour mark cancelled the deficit. But by the time he put his next goal away, in the 85th minute, it was simply one that halved the negative scoreline, as Roma lost 3-2.
Totti scored another brace a week later, this time in a 4-3 win over Messina, to conclude his European Golden Shoe winning tally.
Vincenzo Montella v Messina (19th September 2004)
Speaking of 4-3 scorelines against Messina… The only player in this collection to score a hat-trick for Roma and still lose was Vincenzo Montella, on the second matchday of the turbulent 2004-05 season.
Messina had taken the lead via a penalty, before Montella’s first goal levelled things up 10 minutes before half time. Roma conceded shortly after the break, before L’Aeroplanino’s second and third goals put them in front with 20 minutes to play.
And yet Rudi Voller’s side conceded twice in the next 10 to suffer their first league defeat of what would be a long season.
Francesco Totti v Milan (21st January 2001)
In much happier times, Roma were on course for the Scudetto in the 2000-01 season. Nearly halfway through it, Totti produced one of his many braces in a match against Milan.
His goals came towards the end of each half – the latter from the penalty spot – but Roma were never in a winning position during the game, 2-0 down when he scored his first and 3-1 down before he scored his second.
Thankfully, Roma only suffered one more defeat over the rest of the season in Serie A as they ended up lifting their third Scudetto – and only of Totti’s incredible career.
Honourable mention – Alberto Aquilani v Inter (26/8/06)
On a technicality, this brace came in a game that was a draw in regular time, but due to the competition it was in, became a defeat after extra time.
Following the Calciopoli verdicts in 2006, that year’s Supercoppa Italiana was contested between Inter – the team assigned the 2005-06 title after it was stripped from Juventus – and Roma, who had lost to the Nerazzurri in the previous Coppa Italia final.
The Supercoppa turned into an agonising day for Luciano Spalletti’s side. Roma raced into a three-goal lead, with the second and third goals scored by Alberto Aquilani, all before 35 minutes had been played. But Inter clawed their way back into the game and made it 3-3 to force extra time, in which they claimed the winning goal.
