Roma Women play a long-awaited game on Wednesday as they look to qualify for the next round of the Coppa Italia.
The Giallorosse face off against another team from the capital – Roma CF – as a game that has been rescheduled multiple times finally gets to go ahead.
The two sides should originally have faced off in late October, but now will finally get to play each other.
It is essentially a winner-takes-all clash as the group stage concludes. Both teams won their other group game against Tavagnacco, so whoever wins this will go through.
A draw would even be enough for Betty Bavagnoli’s side, as they have a superior goal difference.
Bavagnoli is expected to rotate her lineup for the match. Andrine Hegerberg definitely won’t play, as she will be out for a few months after suffering an ACL injury.
Agnese Bonfantini is also not in the squad, although her injury is not as serious. Maria Zecca, who may have been hoping for a rare appearance, is out with an eye infection.
Roma could call up some younger players, perhaps giving starts to the likes of Alice Corelli and Serena Landa. They will be hoping to make an impression.
This will not be the first meeting between Roma and their Serie B opponents. They met in Roma’s first ever season, with the Giallorosse winning 9-4 on aggregate.
Now, they will face off again. Roma go into the game as big favourites, as their opponents have only won one of their last five games – their Coppa Italia triumph over Tavagnacco.
The Giallorosse are also looking to get back to winning ways, though, as they too have only beaten Tavagnacco in their last five games.
Most recently, Roma fought all the way against Juventus in the Supercoppa Italiana, taking them to extra time, but not getting the result they deserved.
Nonetheless, it suggested better things might be in store for the club in 2021. Progressing in the cup would be the perfect way to kick on.
The game kicks off at 6pm UK time.
