Glasgow City v Roma Women preview: Season starts with first ever Champions League tie

An exciting new chapter will be written in the Roma Women story on Thursday, when they start the 2022-23 season with their first ever Champions League match.

Roma qualified for the European tournament thanks to a second-placed finish in the 2021-22 Serie A Femminile. Now, before the new league campaign begins, they are embarking on their Champions League adventure.

Fate has brought them to the British Isles; Roma are in Scotland to face the group hosts, Glasgow City, who finished second in the SWPL behind Rangers last season.

At stake is a place in Sunday’s final of this particular phase against the winners of a tie between Paris FC and Servette, all of which will take place at Glasgow’s Petershill Park.

New signings such as Valentina Giacinti, Norma Cinotti, Moeka Minami and Carina Wenninger are among the travelling party. The Champions League experience of former Bayern Munich defender Wenninger could be particularly important.

Other players, like Camelia Ceasar, Elisa Bartoli, Elena Linari, Manuela Giugliano and Andressa Alves, have experienced this competition to varying extents before. For some members of the Roma squad, though, this will be uncharted territory. The likes of Cinotti, Lucia Di Guglielmo and Giada Greggi have never played in European competition until now.

Now, the whole squad must pull together to ensure progress can continue at their first Champions League hurdle.

The game kicks off at 7:35pm UK time. It should be available to watch live via the BBC iPlayer or the BBC Sport website.
