Hegerberg and Lazaro combine to make a small piece of Roma Women history

Roma Women picked up their first win of the new season on Sunday, beating Pink Bari 2-0.

The game was a bit more challenging than they might have expected. However, an improved second half performance ensured they got the three points.

Andressa Alves scored a penalty on her return to the starting lineup to set Roma on their way to victory, before Paloma Lazaro scored her second goal in her second game for the club to remove any doubt.

In doing so, Lazaro became part of a unique goal in the three years since Roma stepped into women’s football.

After some great work by Andrine Hegerberg, who controlled the ball before executing a defence-splitting pass, Lazaro produced a composed finish in front of goal. It continues the bright start to her Roma career after her debut goal last week.

While last week’s goal showed her aerial ability, this time Lazaro demonstrated a different technique, finishing with her feet. She had Hegerberg to thank for the pass, but her finish made it the great assist it deserved to be.

Interestingly, it was the first time ever that two substitutes have combined to score for Roma Women.

There have been plenty of occasions in which a substitute has scored for the club in Serie A Femminile. But this was the first time both the assist and goal had been provided by substitutes.

It proved that Betty Bavagnoli’s decisions had paid off. Replacing Andressa with Hegerberg just moments after the former had scored was bold, but the justification quickly arrived.

The only other time Roma have come close to a similar feat was in a 2-1 win over Hellas Verona in their first season. In that game, Flaminia Simonetti came off the bench to score a last-minute winner, after fellow sub Martina Piemonte had hit the bar with a header. But because it was a deflection off the post, rather than a pass, it couldn’t really be counted as an assist.

Therefore, Hegerberg and Lazaro have made a small piece of history for Roma Women.
