Francesco Totti at 50: Our favourite memories

In tribute to Francesco Totti on his 50th birthday, some of our members have been sharing our favourite memory of the Roma legend.

It goes without saying that Totti is a fan favourite at Roma and always will be, but if you had to narrow it all down to one preferred memory, what would you choose?

That’s the question we’ve been asking in our Giallorossi Yorkshire group and here’s how we’ve answered.

When he scored against Lazio and took a selfie… loved that. I think he wasn’t played as much and it was towards the end of his career but equalising seemed like a huge victory.

I remember a game away at Sampdoria when the ball was crossed to him on the angle just to the left of the box but outside it, he just buried it in the far corner that even the Samp fans stood and applauded him, brilliant.

The famous ‘chip goal’ against Inter… flamboyant, spectacular, genius… everything that epitomised Totti.

My first ‘wow’ memory of Totti was at Euro 2000 with the panenka on Van Der Sar. I’d seen him play on Football Italia before and liked him but that penalty drew me in and ultimately started my journey with Roma. Then the pen against Australia in the 2006 World Cup and then finally the dink over the keeper at Man City when he was in his twilight just showed what a magician he still was. But my ultimate memory of Totti was attending his last game and the Olimpico shaking when Perotti scored the winner to send Roma into the UCL.

I went to Trigoria once to interview Damiano Tommasi for a radio programme (about some charity work of his, don’t ask). There was a blue convertible Ferrari parked at the front across three spaces. I asked one of the people there about it. And they said, oh that’s Totti’s car. As in ‘who else could park like that’? And in he comes chatting with someone else. Very relaxed. This was the scudetto year.

I’d probably have to go for il cucchiaio vs Inter in 2005 too. First real exposure of Totti before the World Cup in Germany. Just shows a technical ability and chauvinism that has been lost in football over the last 15 years. Has the Sprezzatura Castiglione talked about. He could do anything

I got to see Totti score live at the stadium only once, at my first ever game at the Olimpico (2014 friendly against Fenerbahçe). While it was just a penalty and wasn’t in a big game, being able to say that I saw Totti score in person is something I’m grateful I can hold onto.

Did love that cheeky chip goal at 38 to make him the oldest CL scorer. That and the on-off relationship and potential of his years with Cassano. His personalised Diadora/Nike boots were always as classy as he was.
