Roma Women wrapped up the third Scudetto in their history last night with a 2-0 win over Ternana.
Already six points clear of Inter going into their third from last game, Roma simply needed to win to confirm the title, owing to their superior head to head record over their only remaining challengers.
Inter, playing at the same time, beat Milan, which meant a win would have to be obtained by Roma for the title to be confirmed with two games to spare.
Roma were already well on course for the three points against Ternana. Manuela Giugliano scored a retaken penalty to put them in the lead and then broke into the box to double the advantage in the second half.
Thus, Roma earned the win they required to regain the Scudetto, winning their third title in four years after missing out to Juventus last season.
Giugliano, Giada Greggi and Emilie Haavi are the only three players to have been part of all three title wins.
Coach Luca Rossettini has become a league champion at the first time of asking after taking the Roma job in the summer. It’s the second season in a row that a newcomer to the league has claimed the title after Max Canzi did so with Juventus last season.
Juventus’ dethroning of Roma, who finished third in Alessandro Spugna’s final season, prompted a major overhaul of personnel in the capital. In time, the new-look squad have fought their way to arguably the least expected of the women’s team’s three Scudetti.
Roma still have a cup final against Juventus to look forward to as they aim for a domestic double.
