Roma sign ex-Sheffield Wednesday loanee Devis Vásquez

Roma have brought in Denis Vásquez as a free agent to become their new backup goalkeeper after his release by AC Milan.

Vásquez will be the understudy to Mile Svilar for the 2025-26 season, since Pierluigi Gollini is out of Gian Piero Gasperini’s plans and has been exploring a move away before making his debut for the club.

Roma have already added Radosław Żelezny to their goalkeeping department from Juventus this summer, but he is more of a replacement for Renato Marin as third choice, with Vásquez set to be Svilar’s main deputy – a role which generated just one appearance last season for Mathew Ryan.

Vásquez recently had his contract terminated with Milan, where he never made his debut. The Colombian is fresh from a loan spell with Empoli, for whom he made 32 appearances in Serie A last season. The season before, he spent the first half in South Yorkshire on loan at Sheffield Wednesday and then the second half in Serie B with Ascoli.

Despite being South American, Vásquez is understood to not be taking up a non-EU spot in Roma’s squad.

The 27-year-old has signed a contract until 2027 and will wear the number 32 shirt.
