Roma extended their unbeaten run at one of the toughest venues by beating Inter at San Siro on Sunday, which added to 15 previous examples of the Giallorossi defeating the previous season’s Serie A champions on their own turf.
Here’s a quick look back at all the other times it has happened before.
2024-25
Inter 0-1 Roma (April 2025)
Roma knew they had a better chance than usual against Inter thanks to availability issues for the hosts, who were top of the table going into the game (which was sandwiched between their semi-finals in the Coppa Italia and Champions League). Matías Soulé scored the only goal of the game for Roma, who avoided defeat against the then-leaders in the standings for the fourth time in the season. Furthermore, it was Roma’s first clean sheet away to Inter in six years. The win boosted Roma’s push for European qualification, but handed the initiative to Napoli in the title race.
2019-20
Juventus 1-3 Roma (August 2020)
The final day of the 2019-20 season took place far later than usual due to the lockdown that delayed the Serie A schedule for more than three months. By the time it took place, Juventus were already crowned champions for a ninth consecutive time as well. Both sides rotated ahead of European clashes, but Paulo Fonseca – who often struggled against big teams – won’t have minded, as he became the first head coach to lead Roma to victory at Juventus’ new stadium, which was almost a decade old by this point.
2006-07
Inter 1-3 Roma (April 2007)
Inter were assigned the Scudetto for the 2005-06 season after Juventus’ demotion to Serie B for the match-fixing scandal. Roma went on to finish as runners-up behind them in 2006-07, but not before claiming a late win at San Siro. The score was level with two minutes left, before late goals by Francesco Totti and Marco Cassetti to seal the win.
2000-01
Lazio 0-1 Roma (December 2000)
Roma thoroughly enjoying wrestling the Scudetto out of Lazio’s grasp after seeing their neighbours clinch the title in the 1999-00 season. One of many memorable moments on the way to Roma’s third league title was their 1-0 win over their rivals in December, sealed by an infamous Paolo Negro own goal. Of course, this game took place at Stadio Olimpico, but Roma were the designated away team.
1995-96
Juventus 0-2 Roma (December 1995)
Two days before Christmas in 1995, Roma sank Juventus with a 2-0 win thanks to Abel Balbo opening the scoring and then Ciro Ferrara getting an own goal. It took them to their highest place in the table all season, fifth.
1987-88
Napoli 1-2 Roma (March 1988)
Inspired by Diego Maradona, Napoli won their first Scudetto in 1987. Roma didn’t lose to them in either meeting the following season, though. After drawing in Rome, the reverse fixture was a 2-1 win for Nils Liedholm’s side, with goals by Emidio Oddi and Giuseppe Giannini.
1981-82
Juventus 0-1 Roma (November 1981)
The 1980-81 season was controversially won by Juventus at Roma’s expense. Famously, a goal by Maurizio Turone was disallowed that would have helped Roma overtake the Old Lady with two games left. On their next meeting, Roma got some form of revenge when Paulo Roberto Falcão scored the only goal in a win for Liedholm’s men. However, Juventus retained their title, making Roma wait another year to get their own hands on the trophy.
1980-81
Inter 2-4 Roma (October 1980)
The most goals Roma have scored in a game away at the reigning champions were the four they put past Inter in 1980. Liedholm’s side were top of the league when they made the trip north and took the lead inside three minutes via an own goal. Roberto Pruzzo later scored a hat trick. Roma finished above Inter by the end of the season, but not top, owing to the controversy mentioned above.
1974-75
Lazio 0-1 Roma (March 1975)
Taking place at the Olimpico, this derby was won by a Pierino Prati goal. Lazio had won their first Scudetto the year before, but Roma finished two points above them this time around after also beating them 1-0 in the home derby earlier in the season.
1970-71
Cagliari 0-1 Roma (April 1971)
Cagliari won their only Scudetto in the 1969-70 season. Roma kept clean sheets in both games against them during their title defence, drawing 0-0 at home and winning 1-0 away thanks to Renato Cappellini. Roma finished two points above the Sardinian side by the end of the season.
1967-68
Juventus 0-1 Roma (November 1967)
Fabio Capello famously left Roma for Juventus both in his playing and coaching careers, but he was the one who scored the winner for the Giallorossi a few months into his debut season with the club. Despite the win, there were seven teams in between the higher-placing Juventus and Roma by the end of the season.
1964-65
Bologna 1-2 Roma (March 1965)
Bologna won the most recent of their seven Serie A titles in 1964, the year in which Roma won the Coppa Italia for the first time. While there was no Supercoppa Italiana in those days, the clash of the two reigning titlists ended as a draw in the capital and then in Roma’s favour in Emilia-Romagna, with goals by Giuseppe Tamborini and Bruno Nicolè.
1962-63
Milan 0-1 Roma (April 1963)
Former Inter striker Antonio Angelillo was the goalscorer in Roma’s win at San Siro towards the end of the 1962-63 season. He later went on to play for Milan themselves.
1954-55
Inter 1-2 Roma (October 1954)
Inter weren’t just the defending champions in the 1954-55 season, but they were on a back-to-back run of league titles. Roma came from behind when visiting them in October, with Carlo Galli and Enore Boscolo turning the game on its head within a three-minute window.
1941-42
Bologna 1-2 Roma (November 1941)
The 1941-42 season saw Roma win Serie A for the first time. The team they dethroned was Bologna, who they actually did the double over. It was just the second matchday of the new season when Roma visited the reigning champions; Aldo Donati and Naim Krieziu ensured they returned home with two points – as it was in those days – in the bag.
1935-36
Juventus 1-3 Roma (March 1936)
The first time Roma beat the reigning champions away was in the 1935-36 season. Juventus were on a run of five league titles in a row at the time. However, that streak was about to end. Roma had Renato Cattaneo and Dante Di Benedetti (2) on the scoresheet in a 3-1 win before the final five games of the season. Luigi Barbesino’s side went on to finish not just above Juventus, but only one point behind new champions Bologna. It was the second time they’d come second in their young history and the closest they’d come points-wise to the title at that stage.
