Roma have completed the signing of Matias Viña from Palmeiras to fill their left-back void.
Following the injury to Leonardo Spinazzola at Euro 2020, Roma were forced into the market to plug the gap of his absence, which will be around six months.
A plethora of names were quickly linked, but one retained a lasting place on the shortlist and has now finally become a Roma player.
After a period of quarantine in the capital, Viña has signed a five-year contract to become a Roma player after an agreement worth €13m plus additional clauses was found with Palmeiras.
The Uruguay international, who represented his country at this summer’s Copa America, will wear the number five shirt with Roma.
He told the club website: “I am pleased to be wanted by a prestigious club like Roma.
“I have dreamed of playing in Europe since I was a child, and to be able to achieve that goal while playing in a Roma shirt is something that makes me very proud.
“I can’t wait to join up with the coach and my new teammates, and then to run out onto the pitch in front of our fans.”
General manager Tiago Pinto added: “The arrival of Matias Viña allows us to address, in the best possible way, the gap in our squad that was created after Leonardo Spinazzola suffered his unfortunate injury.
“At just 23 years of age Matias has already won trophies at a number of different clubs, first in Uruguay and then in Brazil, including the Copa Libertadores and Brazilian Cup.
“He is a player with a winning mentality and great potential to improve even further.”
Benvenuto, Matias.
