Roman Roots: Michael Sheehan

The Roman Roots series gives Roma fans from outside Italy the chance to explain why they support the Giallorossi.

In this installment, Irish Roma fan Michael Sheehan – who you can find on Twitter @MichaelSheehan8 – describes his affection for the club.

For Michael, it runs in the family – with stories of club icons being passed down to leave him obsessed…

When and how did you become a Roma fan?

I’ve been a fan for as long as I remember. My dad’s mum is from Frascati, about 45 mins to the south of the city. She moved to Ireland when she was in her early 20s and met my grandad. I have relatives though still in the area.

What are your earliest memories of Roma?

I remember being on holidays in Rome and my uncles going crazy over a game on TV. All I know is, it must have been Roma!! But I’ve no idea what game it was.

Who were the first Roma players you can remember liking and why?

Bruno Conti. Again. I would no way have ever remembered Bruno playing. I wasn’t alive for most of his career. But through word of mouth, I was obsessed with him. I always love seeing the footage in the changing room after the Scudetto win and Bruno was smoking and drinking!! ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚ To this day. My dog is called “Bruno”.

Have you been able to form connections with other Roma fans? If so, how?

Yes! I am a member of the Irish Roma fan club based in Dublin. We meet in a bar in the city for every game. There are maybe 40 members overall?

What makes you proud to be a Roma fan?

I like how generally, we are a club who, certainly in recent years, behaves ethically. Also, alas, maybe not so much in recent years. There is a strong emphasis on a connection to the city. The presence of Romans in the team – Bruno, Totti, De Rossi etc. I do think that’s important and continues.
