Roma Women reunite Spugna with Empoli captain Lucia Di Guglielmo

Roma Women have made their second signing of the summer – and it is another player with a pre-existing rapport with new coach Alessandro Spugna.

Lucia Di Guglielmo has joined the club from Empoli, thus making the same move as coach Spugna and forward Benedetta Glionna (who was on loan there from Juventus).

Di Guglielmo has represented Italy at senior level and captained Empoli by the end of last season, in which the side finished in seventh.

A full-back, Di Guglielmo will effectively replace Kaja Erzen on the right, competing for a place with Angelica Soffia. It is worth noting that both players can adapt to the opposite flank if ever Elisa Bartoli is absent, too.

Thus, there should be healthy competition in the full-back departments in the 2021-22 season.

Di Guglielmo is 24 years old and feels it is the right time to take the next step.

She told the club website: “I think that this move to Roma comes at the right moment in my career.

“I feel ready to make that step forward in my career, and I’m delighted to have the chance to do it with this club.”

Head of Women’s Football, Betty Bavagnoli, added: “Lucia is a player with a lot of experience already under her belt, despite her young age.

“Her character has already seen her wear the captain’s armband and earn international honours.

“We really wanted her here, not just for her undoubted quality on the pitch but also for her qualities as a person.”

Benvenuta, Lucia.
