Gonzalo Villar has left Roma but will be staying in Serie A with Sampdoria.
Villar has signed for Sampdoria on loan with an option to buy. It comes after the 24-year-old spent the last six months of the 2021-22 season back in Spain with Getafe.
Roma originally bought him from Elche in January 2020. The midfielder was patient for opportunities at first, before making more of an impact in his first full season, until his form deteriorated in 2021 and beyond.
Favoured less by Jose Mourinho than he was by Paulo Fonseca, Villar struggled to build on his early promise and failed to play at all in the 2021-22 Serie A season until his Getafe switch.
He leaves Roma with 64 appearances behind him, although he failed to score in any of them.
