Roma sign Pierluigi Gollini as new backup goalie

Roma have welcomed in Pierluigi Gollini as their new backup goalkeeper and replacement for Mathew Ryan.

Gollini has joined in a permanent deal – reportedly for free, but with some bonuses possibly being added later – from Atalanta after cancelling his loan at Genoa. His contract will last until 2027.

Roma found themselves searching for a new deputy to Mile Svilar when Ryan became unhappy at his lack of gametime. Gollini quickly emerged as a gettable solution and now the deal is over the line.

Gollini will wear the number 95 shirt and is Roma’s second signing this week after right-back Devyne Rensch.

Pierluigi Gollini: The story so far

After spells in the academies of SPAL, Fiorentina and Manchester United, Gollini made his breakthrough in senior football with Hellas Verona before returning to England for a short stint with Aston Villa when they were in the Championship in 2016.

He has been with Atalanta ever since, initially on loan from the start of 2017 and then permanently. Gollini made his Italy debut – and to date, solitary cap – while on Atalanta’s books in 2019.

He has fallen out of favour in recent years, enduring loan spells with Tottenham (10 appearances), Fiorentina (9 appearances), Napoli (14 appearances) and Genoa (7 appearances) before taking this opportunity with Roma.

Gollini was Genoa’s first-choice keeper at the start of the season, but has been on the bench after an injury. He will often occupy the bench for Roma too, though only time will tell if he gets a greater share of gametime than Ryan.
