Roma took no time at all to pick up from where they left off as they beat Parma 3-0 in their first game back from the international break.
Having started the season unbeaten on the pitch, Roma were looking to continue the momentum. Even without key players like Edin Dzeko and Chris Smalling, they did just that.
A rampant first half set them on their way to victory. Borja Mayoral opened the scoring with his first goal in Serie A, before Henrikh Mkhitaryan took centre stage.
The Armenian, fresh from scoring a hat-trick last time out, doubled the lead with a stunning half-volley from outside the box. He then added a third before the break to wrap up the points.
The second half was just as comfortable for Roma, despite there being no change in the scoreline. They are in third place as a result.
Here’s how Paulo Fonseca reacted to the match.
On the entire squad having an identity
“We’ve changed players out there today but not our identity. Today, with different players, we really put in a good performance.”
On the chances of winning by a bigger margin
“We played really well, especially in the first half – when we scored three goals and we could have scored even more. I think the team is in good form right now.”
On Mkhitaryan, who has already contributed to more than 10 goals this season
“Mkhitaryan is a really clever footballer, a great professional, he can cover a few different positions and he has the perfect attitude. So it hasn’t surprised me the way he’s been able to perform.”
On Mayoral making an impression in Dzeko’s absence
“He played well against a side that sits deep. He really worked hard for the team. His decisions were the right ones and he made a really good run for his goal. He’s developing and he’s growing in confidence.”
On his own future, with his contract expiring at the end of the season
“That doesn’t depend on me, but I’m not concerned about it either. I am focused completely on my work. I’m pleased because the team is playing well and winning too. That’s the most important thing.”
