Roma boasted two players who didn’t miss a single second of Serie A action in the 2024-25 season, with goalkeeper Mile Svilar and defender Evan Ndicka ending the campaign ever-present.
It was the first time since 1984-85 that Roma had two ever-present players in a league campaign, while Ndicka became Roma’s first ever-present outfield player in Serie A this side of the club’s last Scudetto.
As the fixture schedule has increased for clubs, it has become more demanding for any player to achieve an ever-present season. There were even only two goalkeepers before Svilar in the 21st Century who’d managed it for Roma.
Furthermore, Ndicka is the first outfield Roma player to go ever-present in a 38-game Serie A season since Knut Nordahl in 1950-51, and only Sergio Andreoli achieved it before him in 1946-47.
Neither Francesco Totti nor Daniele De Rossi ever completed an ever-present Serie A season, despite being the two Roma players with the most appearances of all time for the club.
The players who enjoyed the most ever-present seasons for Roma were Franco Tancredi, the Scudetto-winning goalkeeper from the 1982-83 season, and former captain Sergio Santarini, who both accomplished the feat on five separate occasions. Incidentally, the Scudetto campaign wasn’t one of them for Tancredi, as his deputy was given some gametime once the title was wrapped up.
In fact, the only Roma players to have been ever-present in a title-winning campaign were Pietro Vierchowod, who was definitely utilised to the maximum during his loan spell from Sampdoria in 1982-83, and four players back in 1941-42: Luigi Brunella, Amedeo Amadei, Aristide Coscia and Miguel Ángel Pantó.
While Tancredi enjoyed three consecutive ever-present seasons from 1984-85 to 1986-87, one of the most impressive feats of endurance in club history was achieved by defender Santarini, who was permanently on the pitch for three consecutive seasons himself from 1975-76 to 1977-78, serving as captain from 1976 onwards.
Other back-to-back ever-present seasons were recorded by goalkeeper Bruno Ballanti (1928-29 and 1929-30), goalkeeper Guido Masetti (1932-33 and 1933-34), defender Eraldo Monzeglio (1935-36 and 1936-37), midfielder Coscia and forward Amadei (1940-41 and 1941-42), defender Brunella (1941-42 and 1942-43), defender Alfio Fontana (1961-62 and 1962-63), goalkeeper Alberto Ginulfi (1969-70 and 1970-71), and defenders Elvio Salvori and Aldo Bet (1970-71 and 1971-72).
With substitutions not being introduced to Serie A until the 1960s, there are more entries from further back, but even in those times, it wasn’t as common to complete every minute of a season as you may suspect.
Below, you can scan through the complete list of Roma players to have enjoyed an ever-present season in Serie A or Divisione Nazionale, although the war-time championships aren’t included. A * denotes that the player is/was a goalkeeper.
The number of minutes each season included is mentioned, since Serie A has varied between being a league with 16, 18 or 20 teams (while the first Divisione Nazionale that Roma participated in was made up of a group of 11 teams).
