Roma are enjoying one of their best starts to a season in recent memory, remaining unbeaten after 10 matches in the league.
Not only that, but it’s been Roma’s highest-scoring start to a Serie A season ever. A 5-2 win over Udinese on matchday 10 made sure of that by taking the tally up to 28.
The previous club record after 10 games in Serie A was 26 in the 2016-17 season. Technically, there was one time Roma did better, with 29 in the 1943-44 season, but at that stage they were playing in a regionalised wartime competition rather than a nationwide top-tier league. The benchmark of 28 was also reached in Roma’s second season, 1928-29, but that was under the Divisione Nazionale umbrella; Serie A would come in the following season.
So, here are the highest goal tallies Roma have had after 10 Serie A matches of a season.
28 (2026-27)
Cast your mind back to this time last year and Roma were taking their time to get going under Gian Piero Gasperini. Most games seemed to be decided by a single goal. After 10 games, Roma had 10 goals.
Season two of the Gasperini era has started much more excitingly. Roma have been in swashbuckling form, overpowering most of their foes.
Starting the season with back-to-back 4-0 wins certainly boosted the morale. Only once have Roma failed to score in a game and that was in the first one back from the international break, a 0-0 draw with Como.
In their four league games since, they’ve scored two, then three, then four and then five.
Four of those five goals against Udinese came in the first half and were enough to make this Roma’s highest-scoring opening 10 games of a Serie A season before Daniele Ghilardi added a fifth to put the icing on the cake.
26 (2016-17)
The 2016-17 season ended up as Roma’s highest-scoring in Serie A, although they could only finish second in the standings behind Juventus.
Given their eventual goals tally, it’s no surprise that they came out of the traps well. After kicking off with a 4-0 win over Udinese, Roma ended up with 26 goals from their opening 10 games.
Edin Džeko scored 10 of them, already surpassing his goal tally from the whole of the previous season and setting himself up to become the league’s top scorer that season with 29 goals.
26 (1960-61)
Roma’s free-scoring start to the 1960-61 season was largely inspired by Pedro Manfredini, who scored hat-tricks in each of their first two matches against Bari and Udinese.
The Argentine striker also scored back-to-back hat-tricks on matchdays seven and eight in wins over Lazio and Padova respectively.
But it wasn’t a single-handed effort. Francisco Lojacono scored in six of Roma’s first 10 games and Alberto Orlando did in four.
Roma finished the season in fifth place with 58 goals from their 34 games.
25 (2015-16)
Given it involved a managerial sacking mid-season, we tend to think of the 2015-16 campaign as one that started slowly and finished strongly for Roma.
But actually, the goals were flowing well enough until the end of October, with 25 going in across Roma’s first 10 games.
The first seven of those goals were all by different scorers, including firsts for the club for Džeko and Mohamed Salah.
Salah, Miralem Pjanić and Gervinho had all reached five goals by Roma’s 10th game of the season. All three were on the scoresheet in a 5-1 win over Carpi in September.
Roma’s next block of 10 games, though, only brought 12 goals and Rudi Garcia paid for it with his job before Luciano Spalletti got things back on track, with a sprinkling of help from winter signings Stephan El Shaarawy and Diego Perotti.
Roma ended the season as Serie A’s highest-scoring team with 83 goals from 38 games. In contrast, champions Juventus scored 75.
24 (2013-14)
Never have Roma or anyone else in Serie A started a season better than they did in 2013-14.
The fact it was at the start of the reign of a coach previously unproven in Italy made it all the more impressive, with Garcia immediately racking up 10 wins from 10.
It was arguably Roma’s defensive record in that time that was the most impressive, with nine of those 10 wins being to nil.
But there were some healthy attacking performances along the way too, including a 5-0 win over Bologna and a 3-0 away win against Inter.
They eventually lost some momentum but still finished second, with 72 goals from 38 games, to get back into the Champions League.
A 2-0 derby win, featuring a famous Federico Balzaretti goal, was another highlight of Roma’s lightning-fast start.
23 (2007-08)
Roma’s best goalscoring start during Spalletti’s first spell in charge was in the 2007-08 season, when they eventually finished as runners up to Inter but the joint-highest scorers in the league with 72 goals, identical to third-placed Juventus.
Ironically, Roma’s highest-scoring game among their opening 10 in the league that season finished as a draw. It was 4-4 against Napoli, with Francesco Totti, Simone Perrotta, Daniele De Rossi and David Pizarro scoring.
Totti was fresh from winning the European Golden Shoe the season before and was up to seven goals for the new season by Roma’s 10th game.
22 (2003-04)
For Fabio Capello’s final season in charge of Roma, no team in Serie A would score more than the 68 from 34 games managed by the eventual runners up.
Roma were unbeaten after their first 10 games, which they won seven of and drew three.
The biggest wins were a 5-0 against Brescia and a 4-0 against Bologna. In fact, only three goals were conceded by Roma along the way.
22 (2000-01)
The 2000-01 season ended in ecstasy for Roma as they claimed the Scudetto – and there were some good omens from how they started their pursuit of the title.
Capello’s side won eight of their first 10 games, scoring four goals in three of them (against Lecce, Brescia and Hellas Verona). New record signing Gabriel Batistuta hit the ground running with 10 goals in the same timeframe.
Totti chipped in with six of his own as Roma got themselves into pole position in the league table, something they would refuse to relinquish until they got their hands on the trophy at the end of the season.
Roma ended up as the league’s highest scorers too, with 68 goals from 34 games.
22 (1934-35)
Roma actually started the 1934-35 on the receiving end of a heavy defeat, 4-1 to Fiorentina, but made amends with a 4-0 win over Brescia a week after.
Enrique Guaita was in strong form in the opening weeks, scoring a brace against Brescia and hat-tricks against Torino and Livorno to go with single strikes against Sampierdarenese, Lazio and Ambrosiana-Inter.
Guaita was the league’s top scorer at the end of the season before he fled back to Argentina. As a result, Roma were the most prolific team in the league with 63 goals from 30 games – 18 more than champions Juventus.
22 (1930-31)
Roma never scored more than three times in any of their first 10 league games in 1930-31, but they did score three in half of them.
There were eight goals by Rodolfo Volk in the timeframe, while the likes of Cesare Augusto Fasanelli, Arturo Chini Ludueña and Fulvio Bernardini were also scorers in multiple games.
Roma finished second at the end of the season with the highest goal tally in the league: 87 from 34 games. Volk was the Capocannoniere.
Note: Roma also had 22 goals after 10 games in 2012-13, but one match was awarded as a 3-0 walkover win, so Roma actually physically scored 19 goals in that time.
