Five Fonseca quotes after Roma’s second-half hammering of Crotone

Roma claimed an emphatic 5-0 win over Crotone on Sunday with braces from Borja Mayoral and Lorenzo Pellegrini and a goal from Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

All the goals came in the second half – the first time Roma had scored five after the break of a Serie A match since 1998.

All three goalscorers are in double figures for the campaign, adding another positive element to the win after a difficult spell.

Here’s how Paulo Fonseca reacted.

On managing energy

“It’s true that a lot of these players played against Manchester United on Thursday and so that makes it difficult to keep up the same intensity for the entire game. It was a professional display today.”

On Ebrima Darboe’s first start

“Darboe did really well, he’s showing the talent he has.”

On Bryan Reynolds

“Reynolds has just come to a different country and a different style of football, he’s going to need some time. Today he played at left-back for the first time, but unfortunately we had some selection issues and needed him to play there. He has talent, but he’s still young.”

On whether he still has regrets about the second half of the first leg against Man Utd

“Yes, because the team had such a good first half and we had no reason to change. What happened was that we started the second half by conceding a goal on the transitions, but the strategy was correct.”

On being succeeded by Jose Mourinho next season

“Yes, we’ve spoken. We are both Portuguese, there’s been no problem. I have a good relationship with him.”
