Eldor Shomurodov switches Roma for Spezia in six-month loan deal

Eldor Shomurodov has left Roma after one-and-a-half seasons to sign for Spezia on loan until June.

Roma parted with €17.5m to bring Shomurodov to the club in the summer of 2021 after his debut season in Serie A with Genoa.

Despite ending the 2020-21 campaign in decent form with Genoa and making an impact in his pre-season appearances for Roma, Shomurodov struggled as the season progressed. Largely playing second fiddle to Tammy Abraham up front, he only scored five goals from 40 appearances in all competitions in his debut season.

There was a spell between December and May when he failed to find the net in a league game at all. His barren run would end on the penultimate day of the Serie A season, when he scored against Venezia.

Over the summer, further attacking competition arrived in the shape of Paulo Dybala and Andrea Belotti. Hence, Shomurodov has added just eight more appearances and one goal – a Europa League consolation against Ludogorets – in 2022-23.

Now, he will be seeing the season out with Spezia, who are 17th in Serie A at the time of his arrival.

Shomurodov’s contract back at Roma runs until 2026.
