Hellas Verona v Roma Women preview: Winless hosts give hope for back-to-back success

Roma Women are aiming to record back-to-back wins for the first time since September in view of their game against Hellas Verona on Saturday.

After beating high-flying Sassuolo last weekend to restore some confidence, Roma are back in action against a side with smaller ambitions this season, so it could be a good opportunity to build some momentum.

Verona will not roll over, but Roma go into this game as favourites – which is arguably the first time they have been able to say that for nearly two months.

That said, Roma lost their visit to Verona last season by a 1-0 reverse in March. But this year, the opponents are winless after seven games, so expectations will be upon Alessandro Spugna’s side.

The form of Valeria Pirone – who had two spells with Verona earlier in her career – will be another factor in Roma’s favour. The striker scored in consecutive matches for Italy in the international break and then netted twice against another of her former clubs, Sassuolo, last week.

Angelica Soffia is another ex-Verona player (and, in actual fact, captain) among the Roma ranks, although her involvement is less of a guarantee. Winger Benedetta Glionna and midfielder Manuela Giugliano, in comparison, are more likely to play against a side they too spent time with before.

In defence, meanwhile, Allyson Swaby could make her 50th start in Serie A for the club.

It will be an interesting game for whoever takes to the field as they adjust to an opponent of a different stature than what they have faced in recent weeks – but they can never afford to underestimate any opposition.

The game kicks off at 1:30pm UK time on Saturday.
