Roma Women lifted the Coppa Italia at the end of a remarkable 2023-24 season thanks to a penalty shootout win over Fiorentina.
Barely a week after completing the Serie A Femminile season against the same opponents and getting their hands on the trophy – that they had long since mathematically secured – for the second season in a row, Roma earned victory in the Coppa Italia too.
It is the second time ever Roma have won the Coppa Italia, but the first time it has been in the same season as them winning the league.
Roma were actually never in front on the night, requiring Valentina Giacinti to equalise after Fiorentina had taken the lead. Then, Fiorentina went 3-1 up, but a late rally included goals by Moeka Minami and Evelyne Viens to take it to extra time. Manuela Giugliano assisted all three of Roma’s goals.
Neither team scored in extra time, so it went to penalties. Fiorentina missed the first spot kick, giving Roma some early confidence, with Giugliano and Elena Linari converting to make it 2-1. However, it was all square after three penalties each due to Anja Sonstevold missing.
Oihane Valdezate emphatically responded to Fiorentina’s fourth going in, meaning it was 3-3 with one penalty left each. Camelia Ceasar – who had been the hero the first time Roma won the Coppa Italia on penalties – saved Emma Severini’s effort, meaning all Sanne Troelsgaard had to do was score hers to win it. The midfielder didn’t let her side down, sparking jubilant celebrations.
The season is now over for Roma and it won’t be forgotten in a hurry. They will enter next season as the defending champions of Serie A and the Coppa Italia.
