Roma did the double over Atalanta for the first time in nine years with a 1-0 win at Stadio Olimpico.
After winning December’s away fixture 4-1, Roma this time dug in to claim another important three points.
Tammy Abraham scored the only goal of the game – his 20th for the club – after being set up by strike partner Nicolo Zaniolo in the first half.
The only blemish for Roma was the sending off of the otherwise effective Henrikh Mkhitaryan in stoppage time for a second yellow card (after Atalanta had also gone down to 10 men with the dismissal of Maarten De Roon for a foul and a protest). He, along with Marash Kumbulla who received a yellow card, will miss the next game through suspension.
But Roma have done well to overcome a tough hurdle in the shape of Atalanta, which gears them up nicely for their midweek shift to Europa Conference League focus. In terms of Serie A, though, the Giallorossi have moved level on points with their fifth-placed rivals, over whom they have now secured the head-to-head advantage too.
