Mario Hermoso completes Roma exit for Leverkusen loan

Mario Hermoso has become the third of Roma’s summer signings to leave the club after half a season.

After Enzo Le Fée left for Sunderland and Mathew Ryan went to Lens, Hermoso has completed a move to Bayer Leverkusen after joining Roma as a free agent at the start of September.

He made just 13 appearances for Roma, scoring once. Claudio Ranieri only used him four times, understandably preferring Evan Ndicka as his left-sided centre-back.

“I really like him but I’ve started with specific players,” Ranieri said earlier this week. “He is in good shape, but he wants to play. He wants more playing time, and I understand his decision to leave. He deserves to play.”

Hermoso’s move to Bayer Leverkusen is a loan deal for the rest of the season.

Roma now have just Ndicka, Mats Hummels and Gianluca Mancini as natural centre-back options, plus the likes of Bryan Cristante and Zeki Celik as emergency solutions, so finding a new defender will be a priority in the final days of the transfer window.
