Roma suffered a 4-1 defeat to Atalanta in their penultimate game of 2020 on Sunday.
Despite going in 1-0 up at half-time thanks to Edin Dzeko’s goal, Roma conceded four in the second half to end their chances of victory.
The result will raise fresh questions of the team’s ability to compete with the top sides, although there is still plenty of time to reach their ambitions for this season.
Here’s how Paulo Fonseca assessed the match.
On playing to win
“We always want to win, and today we came here to win as well. But if we play like we did in the second half today then it becomes very tough to come away with three points.”
On the difference between the two halves
“We played a great, battling first half. And then in the second half we played like boys, like kids. It’s difficult to explain this change of attitude.”
On what was lacking
“In the second half I saw a side that lacked aggression, it was too easy for them to win. Without that aggression you can’t win a game like this.”
On what caused the issues
“It wasn’t physical, it was psychological, a question of attitude.”
On leaving it late with changes
“The team had a great first half, I believed it could continue like this.”
