AS Roma transfer news blog: All the key rumours throughout July 2022

AS Roma have already had a reasonably active transfer window, but there will be much more news to follow throughout July 2022.

In June, Roma added Nemanja Matic to their squad, while offloading the likes of Daniel Fuzato and Robin Olsen on a permanent basis.

Now, with pre-season training set to start in July, the squad will be further taking shape.

The transfer window is open until the end of August, so this could be a key month for how Roma shape their squad.

Belotti offer outlined

More details are emerging of Roma’s pursuit of Andrea Belotti. According to ReteSport, the deal isn’t done yet, but the figures have been revealed.

Roma have offered the striker a three-year contract worth €2.8m per season, with bonuses that could take it up to €3.5m.

Elsewhere, Alfredo Pedulla says it is almost a certainty that Belotti will join Roma, who are also focusing on Georginio Wijnaldum and Eric Bailly.

Agreement with PSG for Wijnaldum

This deal has seemed close for a long time, but now AD in the Netherlands are reporting that Roma and PSG have agreed terms for Georginio Wijnaldum’s move to the Italian capital.

The agreement came over the weekend, meaning Wijnaldum now just has to complete a medical to become a Roma player. His transfer will be a loan with an option to buy.

Sky Sport, meanwhile, still say PSG are waiting for Roma to make a further effort in relation to his salary before giving the go ahead. It could be a critical few hours; they claim Wijnaldum would have to consider other offers after 48 hours.

Tanganga an alternative in defence

A link with an English player – Roma are mentioned as potential takers for Tottenham defender Japhet Tanganga.

According to Il Tempo, Tanganga has been identified as an alternative to Dan-Axel Zagadou or Eric Bailly. He could be available on loan from Tottenham this summer and is also on Milan’s radar.

Mourinho makes contact with Belotti

With Eldor Shomurodov on his way out, Roma can accelerate their pursuit of free agent Andrea Belotti.

According to Gazzetta Dello Sport, Jose Mourinho has been contacting the former Torino captain over the past few weeks.

His conversations with targets have often been decisive and now there is a belief Belotti is holding out for Roma. In fact, he has supposedly said yes to Mourinho and is turning down alternative offers from the likes of Nice and Monaco.

First, though, Tiago Pinto must clear some space on the roster.

Shomurodov set to join Bologna

Saturday 30th July

One of Roma’s costlier recruits from last summer, Eldor Shomurodov, is on the verge of leaving the club.

As reported by Gianluca Di Marzio, the striker is moving towards a loan deal with Bologna.

If he does depart, it should open up space for Roma to acquire Andrea Belotti as a backup to Tammy Abraham.

Roma close to Belotti agreement in principle

Echoes of Roma’s interest in Andrea Belotti have been amplified. According to La Repubblica, there is now a “virtual handshake” between the club and the free-agent striker.

Acquiring Belotti will have to wait for some player exits to take place first, notably when it comes to Eldor Shomurodov. But if the Uzbekistan international can be offloaded – potentially to Torino – Roma could make yet another smart free signing.

And according to Calciomercato.com, Belotti has been in contact with Roma captain Lorenzo Pellegrini already.

Only the OK missing for Perez to Celta Vigo

Over in Spain, optimism grows that Roma winger Carles Perez will be playing in La Liga again.

Heavily targeted by Celta Vigo recently, the former Barcelona man is now close to making that move, per Marca.

In fact, they are just waiting for the final OK. Roma have been holding out for a permanent sale of Perez rather than a loan, but his desire to join Celta has been clear.

Shomurodov and Belotti in effective swap?

Roma have set off to Israel for the latest stage of their pre-season training. However, some players have not travelled with the group.

One player left at home is Eldor Shomurodov due to a technical choice. Exit links are resurfacing for the summer 2021 signing, with ForzaRoma.info naming him as a target for Torino (as well as Sampdoria and Bologna).

Interestingly, they reiterate Roma would be interested in signing former Torino captain Andrea Belotti on a free transfer if they can clear space for him first.

Veretout to leave after Wijnaldum arrival

Roma’s midfield continues to evolve and there will likely be more arrivals and departures.

Focusing on outgoings will be Tiago Pinto’s next task after bringing Georginio Wijnaldum to the club, should that be successful.

According to Calciomercato, the Dutchman’s arrival at Roma will free up Jordan Veretout to leave. A move to Marseille has been mentioned as the most likely solution.

However, Radio Radio have also suggested Juventus may want to take him on loan depending on the extent of Paul Pogba’s injury.

Veretout will not be with Roma for their pre-season friendly against Tottenham at the weekend due to physical issues.

Bailly wants Roma move

There have been some social indications, but now news outlets are confirming Eric Bailly is keen to join Roma this summer.

According to Gazzetta Dello Sport, the Manchester United defender has given his approval to the move, which would see him reunite with Jose Mourinho.

The deal should be a loan with an option to buy.

Wijnaldum to arrive by weekend

Georginio Wijnaldum has one foot in Rome. According to Teleradiostereo, the midfielder could arrive in the Italian capital between Friday and Saturday.

Official confirmation of how his salary will be shared by Roma and PSG should follow on Monday.

Meanwhile, Emanuele Zotti notes the issue of a €3m bonus Wijnaldum is due if he stays at PSG into August must be resolved. But we are getting closer.

Roma reach Wijnaldum agreement and work on Bailly

Dan Friedkin’s trip to Paris must have been productive. According to Calciomercato.com, Roma now have Gini Wijnaldum within their grasp.

It is claimed the midfielder will be joining the club on loan with an option to buy for €10m, which could become an obligation at a certain appearance threshold. Wijnaldum will earn €7m per season, half paid by PSG.

The report adds Roma hope to use a similar formula to strengthen their defence with Eric Bailly from Manchester United.

However, other sources – such as RomaPress – have indicated the agreement for Wijnaldum is close, but not done. Gianluca Di Marzio says there is still work to be done on the salary arrangement, but the ex-Liverpool star is keeping Roma as his preferred destination.

Friedkin flying to Paris for Wijnaldum

Yesterday, Paulo Dybala was presented to the Roma fans – and another big signing may be about to arrive.

According to Il Tempo, Roma owner Dan Friedkin is flying to Paris in order to push through a deal for PSG midfielder Gini Wijnaldum.

Optimism remains a deal can be done soon.

More meetings for Wijnaldum

Tuesday 26th July

Roma are gaining confidence in their bid to bring Georginio Wijnaldum to Serie A. According to Il Tempo, there was a meeting yesterday between his agent and Tiago Pinto.

All parties want to reach an agreement as soon as possible. Both Roma and Wijnaldum’s current employers PSG will be in Israel for separate pre-season fixtures by the end of the week; therefore, there could be further talks over the midfielder’s future.

A loan with an option to buy remains Roma’s preference.

Contact confirmed for Eric Bailly

Over the weekend, British tabloids such as the Daily Mirror brought Eric Bailly back into focus as a potential defensive target for Roma.

Yesterday, Sky Sport expert Gianluca Di Marzio confirmed Roma are in contact to sign the Manchester United defender, who previously played under Jose Mourinho and alongside Chris Smalling.

It remains to be seen if he is an alternative target to Dan-Axel Zagadou, or an additional one.
