Houssem Aouar announced as the first Roma signing of summer 2023

Roma have announced Houssem Aouar as their first summer signing for 2023.

Aouar arrives on a free transfer after his contract expired at Lyon, his hometown club and the only team he has previously represented.

After reportedly reaching an agreement last month, the midfielder has signed a contract with Roma until 2028 and will wear the number 22 shirt, which was vacated in the winter by Nicolo Zaniolo.

Aouar told the club’s official website: “I’m very happy to have signed for Roma, because they’re a great club with a great history.

“I think it’s the right project for me, with a big team, quality players and a unique fanbase. I’m now a Giallorossi player and I’m ready to go.”

Aouar only made 18 appearances in the 2022-23 season after encountering various injury issues. In total, he has left Lyon with 233 appearances and 41 goals behind him.

Interestingly, 65 of those appearances came under ex-Roma boss Rudi Garcia, who saw him score 16 goals – more than he netted for any other coach at Lyon.

Previously, he has played in both the Champions League and Europa League – the latter of which he will get to experience again with Roma this season.

At international level, he was once capped by France, but has since switched allegiance to Algeria. Once he makes his debut for them, he will become the first Algerian player to represent Roma.

And it will all be Giallorossi Yorkshire’s fault if it goes wrong.
