Roma revel in big win over Atalanta with Abraham at the double

Tammy Abraham scored twice as Roma earned a long-awaited big win over Atalanta on Saturday, in a game in which Nicolo Zaniolo and Chris Smalling also found the net.

Big games have been problematic for Roma over the past couple of years, with Atalanta one of the main stumbling blocks. But they lifted the burden with a big win in Bergamo.

Abraham put Roma ahead in the first minute, before Zaniolo scored his first Serie A goal of the season and thus since his second ACL injury.

Atalanta reduced the deficit just before the break when Luis Muriel’s shot deflected off Bryan Cristante and into the net. Then, La Dea thought they had equalised in the second half, but Duvan Zapata’s header was ruled out for an offside beforehand.

Roma took it upon themselves to get back in control and did so when Smalling connected aerially with a free kick from Jordan Veretout to make it 3-1.

Abraham put the icing on the cake with his second of the evening to complete a momentous win for the club that has been a long time coming.
