Roma Women v Sampdoria preview: Chance to confirm Champions League place

Roma Women can make this the day they qualify for the Champions League for the first time as they prepare to face Sampdoria in Serie A Femminile.

From their penultimate game of the league season and last at home, a win would guarantee a second-place finish, putting Roma into next season’s Women’s Champions League.

Already guaranteed their highest ever finish in Serie A, it would be an impressive accomplishment from Alessandro Spugna’s side. But it is not done yet.

For their part, Sampdoria are on course to finish in the top half from their first season in the top flight. That said, they go into this game on the back of successive defeats.

Roma, on the other hand, have not tasted defeat in the league since October. If it stays that way, they will not be caught in the race for second place.

They will want to get there in style, though, so will be hoping for a fifth consecutive win to seal their target.

The reverse fixture was a 2-1 win for Roma, who clinched all three points in the 90th minute. It could be another dramatic day, especially in front of their own fans at Stadio Tre Fontane.

There are four notable absentees from the squad list; Lucia Di Guglielmo, Benedetta Glionna, Emilie Haavi and Alice Corelli are all missing out.

In contrast, it will be a special day for two players in particular. Elisa Bartoli – a goalscorer last week in the cup against Empoli – will captain Roma as usual on the occasion of her birthday, while Annamaria Serturini is in line to become the first Giallorosse player to reach the tally of 100 appearances for the club.

There could be further reason to celebrate if Roma can get the result they want.

The game kicks off at 1:30pm UK time.
