Marcus Thuram linked

According to L’Equipe, Roma are one of the teams interested in Borussia Monchengladbach forward Marcus Thuram.

Roma have already been looking towards the Bundesliga side for their left-back Ramy Bensebaini, who unfortunately seems too expensive. A similar issue may arise with Thuram, who is valued at €25m.

The Frenchman also has admirers at Napoli, so a move to Italy could be a possibility. Roma could still be the destination, as they have reportedly made contact with his entourage, despite the deal being difficult.

Pastore exit possible

Sunday 18th July

Javier Pastore continues to be a burden on Roma’s wage bill while training individually in pre-season. Clearly, all parties need to find a solution – and one may be taking shape.

The attacking midfielder has been in France recently and there have been rumours of a move to Monaco. His agent has told LaRoma24 that a move to the principality is a possibility.

There seems to be some traction growing behind this rumour, as Pastore wants one last European adventure before returning to Argentina. A return to Ligue 1, where he used to play for PSG, could benefit everyone.

Mourinho to watch Diaz

Sunday 18th July

Roma will be heading to Portugal during their pre-season preparations, which will include a friendly against Jose Mourinho’s former club Porto.

The opponents for that game have a player who is of interest to Roma: Luis Diaz. A winger, he featured for Colombia at the Copa America.

Links with Roma are backed up by Portuguese source A Bola, who claim Mourinho will speak to him in and around the friendly to gauge his feelings over a move.

Diaz’s agent, though, has told AS there are no concrete offers for his client yet, despite there being plenty of interest.

Dimarco deal looking less likely

Sunday 18th July

It seems one left-back who won’t be joining Roma is Federico Dimarco. One of the first names to be linked following Leonardo Spinazzola’s injury, Dimarco is emerging from a promising loan spell at Verona from Inter.

However, figures at his parent club have since indicated that they are planning to keep him this season after the departure of Ashley Young.

Coincidentally, they are also targeting Alex Telles, who is admired by Roma, but such a deal looks unlikely for either club. Therefore, Dimarco may stay at Inter and Roma may have to look elsewhere.

Ligue 1 duo on left-back list

Roma’s search for a left-back has taken them all over Europe – and beyond – so far. The latest destination subject to their surveys is France, where they have been linked with a couple of names.

According to Il Messaggero, Roma are considering Rennes’ Faitout Maouassa – who is entering the final year of his contract – and Lille’s Reinildo (pictured above).

Reinildo has been mentioned as a possible target before, whereas Maouassa is a new link – although also backed up by Gazzetta Dello Sport.

Both sources indicate an interest remains in Bundesliga-based Ramy Bensebaini, but he is too expensive; the same goes for Palmeiras’ Matias Vina.

Contact made for Emerson

Saturday 17th July

There remains a chance that the man to replace Leonardo Spinazzola at Roma will be the man who replaced him for Italy after his injury at Euro 2020.

Emerson Palmieri has been tipped to make a return to the capital, even though Chelsea would demand an unreasonably high fee for a player who is their third choice in his position.

According to Rudy Galetti of SportItalia, Roma have now initiated contact with Emerson’s entourage, although the €20m asking price remains prohibitive and there is also rival interest from Luciano Spalletti’s Napoli.

Roma revive Koopmeiners chase?

Saturday 17th July

In one of the more surprising pieces of Roma transfer news to emerge recently, De Telegraaf are claiming that the club are still in the background for Teun Koopmeiners.

The AZ Alkmaar midfielder was reportedly a top target in the event of Maurizio Sarri becoming head coach, but he ended up at Lazio instead while Jose Mourinho took the Roma job.

Mourinho’s top target is another midfielder, Arsenal’s Granit Xhaka, so it seems unlikely that Roma would still be pursuing Koopmeiners.

But with his negotiations with Atalanta having stalled, Roma are still suggested as another suitor by the Dutch source.

Robin Olsen is ready to leave Roma again, this time on loan to Lille.

According to Corriere Dello Sport, the Swedish shot-stopper will join the French champions with an option to buy for €8m.

Nicolo Schira, though, claims it will be a permanent transfer for €5m.

As always, the actual prices will only be certain upon any official announcement.

Diawara turns down Wolves

Saturday 17th July

Roma recently signed Rui Patricio from Wolves, but one man who will not be moving the other way, it seems, is Amadou Diawara.

The midfielder has struggled for consistency in recent months and therefore may be at risk within Roma’s rebuild.

However, according to Il Tempo, he has turned down the chance to join Wolves, instead preferring to fight for his place.

The possible arrival of Granit Xhaka may force him to reconsider his stance, though.

Palmeiras set Vina price

Saturday 17th July

It was recently revealed that Roma’s search for cover at left-back had expanded beyond Europe, with Matias Vina of Palmeiras now under consideration.

He remains on the radar, but according to Sky Sport, comes with an asking price of €18m. Because he has never played in Europe before, Roma deem that too high and may try to sign someone else on loan instead.

Lopez leaves for Marseille

Saturday 17th July

All that was missing was official ocnfirmation from Roma’s end, and it has now arrived.

The club have confirmed how much money they might receive after letting Pau Lopez join Marseille on loan with a conditional obligation to buy.

Lopez moves to Marseille on loan for an initial fee of €720,000 plus up to €500,000 in bonuses. The transfer will become permanent, depending on certain conditions, for a fee of €12m.

Mourinho wants Icardi?

Friday 16th July

The arrival of Jose Mourinho as head coach has shown Roma that what once seemed beyond their dreams could be feasible.

Perhaps a similar route could follow with Mauro Icardi, who has once again been linked to the club by La Repubblica.

The former Inter striker is not quite as potent as he once was, but remains a dangerous player and is still only 28.

According to the newspaper, Mourinho would like to sign him to be Roma’s new striker, but such a move would have to depend on Edin Dzeko leaving. The Bosnian has admirers in the Premier League and at Juventus, who tried to sign him last summer.

If Dzeko does depart, Roma could try to take Icardi on loan from PSG. There could be an option to buy for around €40m, which would be an obligation in the case of a two-year loan.

Icardi may also be willing to lower his salary to return to Serie A, but this doesn’t sound too advanced just yet.

Tottenham keen on captain Pellegrini

Friday 16th July

Lorenzo Pellegrini’s contractual situation remains a cause of concern for Roma, as there are just 12 months left on his deal, which still contains a €30m release clause.

Talks will soon commence over a new deal without such a clause, but in the meantime, the club are vulnerable to losing the man who finished last season with the captain’s armband.

According to The Athletic, Tottenham are now interested in taking Pellegrini from Roma. Former Juventus chief Fabio Paratici has become their managing director and is targeting several Serie A players.

Pellegrini is now on his radar as well, although he could still turn them down even if they pay the full price of his exit clause.

Monaco make Pastore move

Friday 16th July

No longer a part of Roma’s plans, Javier Pastore is on the lookout for a new club. According to Gazzetta Dello Sport, he has the chance to stay in Europe.

The newspaper claims that Monaco have made an enquiry to his entourage. However, there has been no formal offer to Roma.

Roma make contact for Vina?

According to SportItalia, the latest left-back Roma have made an enquiry for is Matias Vina.

The Uruguay international, who is 23 years old, currently plays for Palmeiras in Brazil. It is claimed that Roma have submitted a €10m offer, which Palmeiras are unlikely to accept.

Olsen also linked with Ligue 1

Robin Olsen is close to joining Ligue 1 champions Lille, according to Sky Sport.

The Swedish goalkeeper spent last season on loan at Everton from Roma and now is set to depart again following the signing of Rui Patricio.

Lille need a replacement for Mike Maignan, who joined Milan earlier this summer.

Kluivert close to Nice

Thursday 15th July

Some people predicted Justin Kluivert could have a future at Roma under Jose Mourinho due to their existing relationship, but it became clear that he wouldn’t when he was left out of their initial pre-season squad list.

Now, Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that the winger is close to joining Nice in Ligue 1, where manager Christophe Galtier – who won the title with Lille last season – is leading the talks.

The deal is supposedly in the “final stages”.

Battle with Brighton for Cucurella

Thursday 15th July

The latest left-sided player to be linked with Roma is Marc Cucurella of Getafe.

Able to play in wide midfield or at full-back – presumably the territory Roma envisage him playing in – the former Barcelona academy player is also admired by Brighton, according to The Athletic.

Cucurella has a release clause of €18m, so may be affordable, and at the age of 22 (turning 23 next week) would be a long-term investment.

Florenzi to be called up

Thursday 15th July

Roma did not call up any players who were out on loan last season for the first part of this summer’s training camp.

However, one man who may be reintegrated is former captain Alessandro Florenzi, who played for PSG last season.

He continues to be linked with an exit, but Leggo say he will team up with the squad for their foreign training retreat after his holiday following Italy’s Euro 2020 win.

Florenzi still wants to leave, as he is not content to be a backup, but his only suitors are in Italy and he would prefer to move abroad.

Xhaka plans accelerate

Wednesday 14th July

Roma were expecting their first signing of the summer to be Granit Xhaka of Arsenal, but were unable to do a deal before Euro 2020.

The midfielder remains a top target for Jose Mourinho, but a difference remains between the offer and Arsenal’s demands.

After securing the signing of goalkeeper Rui Patricio, though, the attention is now firmly on getting the Xhaka deal done. According to Leggo, Roma want to complete the signing by the end of this week.

With that in mind, Calciomercato claim they are willing to raise their offer to €18m, which is still €2m short of the asking price. However, the player’s will could be decisive, as he is ready to cut his holidays short to get going with pre-season training if an agreement is found.

Telles interest confirmed

Wednesday 14th July

Roma were recently linked with Alex Telles of Manchester United to fill their left-back void. Those rumours have been given further weight by Sky Sport, although a loan deal remains the likely formula.

Telles only joined Man Utd in October but struggled to get past Luke Shaw in the pecking order. He could return to Italy after a previous spell with Inter Milan, but there has been no formal contact between Roma and United yet.

Torino tempted by Milanese

Wednesday 14th July

One of the more surprising absentees from Roma’s pre-season training group was Tommaso Milanese, the Primavera midfielder who had some first-team opportunities in last season’s Europa League.

He is expected to leave the club this summer, but could still have a future at Serie A level. According to Tuttosport, Torino are interested in a transfer – which is also confirmed by Rete Sport.

Roma could bank around €4m from his sale, while Tuttosport speculate that both he and Marash Kumbulla, who endured a difficult first season in the capital, could be used as bait in a revived bid for Torino striker Andrea Belotti.

Telles to fill left-back void?

Monday 12th July

A new name mentioned in Roma’s left-back hunt is that of Alex Telles, who has not enjoyed much gametime since moving to Manchester United last October.

According to Calciomercato, the Brazilian has now been offered to Roma, who could give him the chance to return to Serie A following a previous spell with Inter.

Jose Mourinho, despite sharing a few former clubs with Telles, has never worked with him before, but would be happy to sanction the deal.

The only issue is that Roma would prefer a loan with an option to buy, whereas United would prefer a permanent sale.

It has taken slightly longer than expected, but it appears Roma are close to signing Rui Patricio from Wolves to be their new number one.

According to Sky Sport, the Portuguese keeper will undergo his medical on Monday ahead of his €11m transfer.
