It appears as if Roma have found a significant breakthrough in their attempts to sign Chris Smalling on a permanent basis.

According to Gianluca Di Marzio, Smalling has agreed personal terms with Roma over a contract to return to Serie A.

Now, Roma must agree a fee with Manchester United. Di Marzio has previously reported that the two clubs could agree to another season-long loan with an obligation to buy for €12m next year.

Roma were always expected to go back in for Smalling after selling Patrik Schick. With that operation now completed, it could be an important few days in the pursuit of the Englishman.

Federico Fazio’s departure from Roma is moving closer. According to Sky Sport, the defender has agreed to join Cagliari.

It emerged last week that the Sardinian club, now coached by Eusebio Di Francesco, had agreed a deal with Roma for the Argentine. However, Fazio still had to negotiate personal terms with them.

Now, he appears to have accepted their offer. Therefore, he could be a Cagliari player in the coming days.

Roma linked with Giroud

Even if Edin Dzeko stays for the new season, Roma will need a new striker to provide competition.

So far, the main target had been Arkadiusz Milik – but that deal would only be able to happen if Dzeko left.

Hence, Roma are looking at alternative options – and a new target has emerged.

According to Le10 Sport, Roma have made an approach to Chelsea for Olivier Giroud, who has fallen down the pecking order at Stamford Bridge following the arrival of Timo Werner.

The French striker has previously been linked with Serie A rivals Lazio and Inter Milan, but Roma have now shown their interest.

Le10 Sport claims Giroud would be happy to stay at Chelsea, despite his lack of first team opportunities. However, the Premier League club are open to selling him.

His contract only runs until next year, so there could be an opportunity for someone to buy him before then.

Roma’s sale of Patrik Schick hit a roadblock last week when a physio travelling with the Czech Republic squad tested positive for Covid-19, forcing the striker to quarantine.

That period of isolation has now ended, meaning Schick is free to seal his exit.

The former Sampdoria forward has now arrived to undergo his medical with Bayer Leverkusen, who have agreed a deal with Roma worth around €27m.
