Official: Roma announce signing of Mario Hermoso

It’s a case of third time lucky for Roma as they welcome Mario Hermoso to the club as their new centre-back.

In a dramatic end to the transfer window, Roma booked Kevin Danso and Tiago Djalo in for medicals, but neither completed their move to the club.

Having lost Diego Llorente and Dean Huijsen from last season, as well as sending Marash Kumbulla away again, Roma were left with just three centre-backs by the time the transfer window closed, making it important to find a free agent they could sign to complete the department.

Hermoso has now arrived as a reinforcement. He will wear the number 22 shirt in his new colours.

Hermoso is a left-footed centre-back who came through the ranks at Real Madrid before making his breakthrough with Espanyol. For the past five seasons, he has been back in the Spanish capital with Atletico Madrid.

Capped five times by Spain between 2018 and 2019, Hermoso now moves to a club outside his native country for the first time in his career.

Giallorossi Yorkshire verdict

The centre of defence is an area Roma waited too long to strengthen this summer, and circumstances have caused them to dip into the free-agent market after the deadline for buying players passed.

But with Hermoso, they have got hold of who was one of the more appealing options that was still available.

As a left-footer, it will be interesting to see how he battles for a place with Evan Ndicka, who has been Roma’s most consistent player in the first three rounds of the season, and whether or not they could feature in the same system.

Numerically, at least, Roma have reinforced appropriately, with all eyes now on whether or not Chris Smalling stays. If he does, that would be two good options at right centre-back and left centre-back.
