Roma offload Edoardo Bove on loan to Fiorentina

Edoardo Bove has left Roma to join Fiorentina on loan in an exit that could become permanent.

A product of Roma’s academy, Bove lived the dream during 92 appearances for the club, within which he scored four goals – including the one that sent Jose Mourinho’s side into the 2023 Europa League final.

However, Bove has had a more peripheral role under Daniele De Rossi’s management, and the imminent addition of Manu Kone from Borussia Monchengladbach has blocked his pathway even more.

Roma have been working throughout the summer to place Bove elsewhere, and after late moves by Nottingham Forest and Eintracht Frankfurt, the 22-year-old has decided to stay in Serie A with Fiorentina.

The move is an initial loan, but Fiorentina will have the option to make it permanent – and will in fact be obliged to if he reaches a certain percentage of appearances.

Giallorossi Yorkshire verdict

You have to feel sorry for a boyhood Roma fan to be having to leave the club, but while for some this is a heartbreaking development, in reality Bove needed to develop more.

He was a breath of fresh air when he took his chance under Mourinho, but that was in an otherwise underwhelming midfield, and after arguably being overused in a manner detrimental to his development, Bove has not progressed enough since to earn a regular starting role – although that’s not to say he won’t ever, and had he stayed, he wouldn’t have deserved to be frozen out either.

De Rossi has spoken before of his regret of seeing Roma-developed players leave, so perhaps he has decided Bove doesn’t fit into the plans, but we won’t really know for sure.

Fiorentina feels like a decent move for him and a good level of club where he can get back to playing regularly in a competitive environment.
