Roma have confirmed that Alberto De Rossi will remain as Primavera coach into a 19th year.
There had been some speculation that De Rossi, father of Daniele, might be coming to the end of his time with the club, but Roma have instead confirmed he will continue to guide the under-19s in 2021-22.
He has been in charge of the Primavera setup since 2003, helping players like Lorenzo Pellegrini and Alessandro Florenzi – both of whom went on to captain the senior side – come through.
Roma finished fourth in the regular season of the 2020-21 Campionato Primavera 1, before falling at the first hurdle of the Final Eight to Atalanta.
Several of the players De Rossi has been helping develop are currently training with Jose Mourinho’s senior squad in the hope of making a breakthrough. Ebrima Darboe, Riccardo Calafiori and Nicola Zalewski are among those to have already played for the first team under Mourinho’s predecessor, Paulo Fonseca.
De Rossi will now continue promoting the next generation for a new first team coach.
“I love my job; my enthusiasm for it never wanes,” he told asroma.com. “I do it for my hometown team, for the club I love. I have always felt a particular honour to be able to do this as my job. But it is a massive responsibility too.
“We have a duty to prepare as best we can those kids that could progress to the first team.”
In that regard, he was asked if he had spoken to Mourinho yet.
“We still have not had a chance to meet,” he replied. “At the start of the season we all have different tasks to focus on.
“Nevertheless, we are all very happy that he has come to Roma. A world-class coach like Mourinho is not just a motivating factor for the players, but for all of us who work within football.”
De Rossi will be working alongside the guidance of Vincenzo Vergine, who became the head of the club’s youth sector in June.
“I’ve known Vincenzo for a number of years,” De Rossi added. “He is an expert in the sector, with a lot of experience, and he’ll be a great benefit for us all. We wish him well with his role and welcome him into our family.”Embed from Getty Images
The hope will be that De Rossi can help the next generation come through as part of a new structure in the academy.
Immediately turning his attention to the upcoming tasks, he explained the purpose he will continue to serve.
“Unlike senior football, we have a bit more time, time that allows us to work with a little less pressure on us. If we lose a few games, nothing terrible happens.
“The key thing is to never lose sight of the primary objective – which is to develop players with the right values, who represent the Roma way and can also become a key part of what the club wants to become.”
