Fonseca frustrated over ‘unfair’ result against Inter

Roma suffered a 3-1 defeat to Inter Milan on Wednesday to continue their struggles against the big teams.

Inter were the only one left that Paulo Fonseca had not been beaten by. But after a series of draws between the two, one team finally cracked – and it was Roma.

After falling two goals down in the opening stages, hope was restored when Henrikh Mkhitaryan scored just before the break. Roma probed for an equaliser in the second half but lacked a cutting edge. Eventually, an Inter breakaway was finished off by Romelu Lukaku to end any hopes of claiming another draw.

Hence, the pattern of Roma competing reasonably well with big teams but not getting a result continued. Here’s how Fonseca reacted after the match.

On whether the result was fair

“We played most of the game in the Inter half. It’s a bit of an unfair result considering how we did.”

On whether the team was focused

“Yes. The team showed character today. We never let Inter play the way they wanted, we showed personality and we created a lot of chances against what is the best defence in Serie A.”

On the difference between the two halves

“In the first 45 minutes we allowed Inter to counter-attack and on their first such offensive move they scored. But I think that the team responded well to that setback and were much better in the second half – creating four or five chances to equalize and make it 2-2.”

On how things unfolded tactically

“I thought that Inter would try to play on the counter-attack, and that is how it turned out. But, as I said, the second half showed what the team is capable of.”

On how important it is to beat Lazio next

“Very. Now we need to make sure the players all rest and recover and we don’t have a lot of time for that – but the squad has a lot of desire to win this game.”
