Official: Mats Hummels joins Roma to complete defence

Legendary German defender Mats Hummels has completed his arrival at Roma on a free transfer.

Hummels has signed a contract to enable him to spend the rest of the 2024-25 season with Roma, who are the first non-German club he has represented in his illustrious career.

The 35-year-old needs no introductions. He came through the Bayern Munich system, made his name at Borussia Dortmund, then had second spells with both of those clubs.

Between those spells, he won the Bundesliga five times. And of course, in 2014, he won the World Cup with Germany.

Now, it is time for him to showcase his class in Italy. He will wear the number 15 shirt for Roma, who had a final vacancy to fill in defence following the end of Chris Smalling’s spell with the club.

Hummels is the second free-agent defender Roma have signed after the closure of the summer transfer window, following in the footsteps of ex-Atletico Madrid man Mario Hermoso.

Benvenuto, Mats.
