Marash Kumbulla becomes Roma’s third loan leaver this week

Roma have made Marash Kumbulla the third member of their squad to be sent out on a new loan spell away from the club in the space of a week.

Kumbulla has joined Espanyol on loan for the 2024-25 La Liga season, after spending six months last season on loan with Sassuolo.

The 24-year-old’s most recent Roma appearance was back in April 2023, before an ACL injury. He remains under contract with La Magica until 2027.

Kumbulla is the third Roma player to leave on loan this week, although all of the players in question were ones who ended last season out on loan too.

On Monday, Ebrima Darboe dropped back down to Serie B to sign for Frosinone for the season. The 23-year-old midfielder impressed while with Sampdoria in the second tier at the end of last season following a less successful spell in Austria with LASK in the first part of the campaign. Darboe’s Roma contract lasts until 2026.

Then on Wednesday, Ola Solbakken – another player who had two loan spells last season, first with Olympiacos in Greece and then with Urawa Reds in Japan – moved elsewhere in Serie A, signing for Empoli on loan. Unlike in the Darboe and Kumbulla deals, there is an option in the contract for Solbakken’s move to become permanent, despite him being on Roma’s books until 2027.
