Angelica Soffia has signed a contract extension with Roma Women to commit her future for the next two seasons.
Soffia has grown in stature since her arrival at the club upon their entry into women’s football in 2018. Already an experienced player despite her young years, she has overcome several obstacles to become one of the league’s best right-backs.
She reclaimed her starting role from Kaja Erzen last season to earn the Giallorossi Yorkshire Roma Women awards for Young Player of the Season and Most Improved Player. More importantly than that, she became a full Italy international as well and has already scored more goals for her country than she has for Roma.
Soffia now faces fresh competition for her place from former Empoli captain Lucia Di Guglielmo, who has followed coach Alessandro Spugna to the club. However, with the way she responded to the challenge of Erzen, she will be confident of continuing her development and has therefore committed until 2023.
She told the club website: “I’ve chosen Roma once again because I feel there is still so much I can give to, and get back from, this club and this city.
“It’s an environment that fills your heart with passion and love and that gives you the power to overcome adversity – and I think the victory in the Coppa Italia was just another example of that.
“I cannot wait to get started on the new season to help advance this club as far as possible.”
To date, Soffia has made 61 appearances for the club, 53 of which have been starts, either playing at right-back or on the opposite side of defence.
Her solitary goal for the club so far came in the 2019-20 Coppa Italia, but scoring is not her responsibility and she has impressed in all the important departments.
Only three players have made more appearances for Roma Women since their formation than Soffia, who now has plenty more to look forward to in the capital.
