It’s the beginning of another new season for Roma – one for which there is increasing excitement – as they take on Salernitana on Sunday.
After finishing sixth in Serie A during Jose Mourinho’s first season in charge, hopes are high for an improved placing in the league this time around. The arrivals of players like Paulo Dybala, Gini Wijnaldum and Nemanja Matic has generated enthusiasm.
Any of those players could make their competitive debuts for the club on the opening day, during which Roma will be away against Salernitana. The hosts came 17th in the league last season after something of a great escape.
They too have been active in the transfer window, bringing in players like Erik Botheim – a familiar face to Roma after his exploits against them for Bodo/Glimt last season. Ex-Roma players Federico Fazio and Norbert Gyomber are in their squad too.
It will be interesting to see how Roma line up against them. The 3-5-2 has remained a formation of preference throughout pre-season, but Mourinho has a few options available to him now.
Roma beat Salernitana by an aggregate score of 6-1 between last season’s two fixtures. Interestingly, the trip to Salerno was the first away fixture of 2021-22, just as it is for 2022-23. Roma will be hoping to get off to a good start again as they strive for further success this season.
The match kicks off at 7:45pm UK time and will be live on BT Sport 1.
