Roma Women v Empoli preview: Will momentum continue after international break?

Roma Women are back in action after the international break when they host Empoli on Sunday.

Roma are looking to continue the momentum they were building before the brief pause. Betty Bavagnoli’s side are currently on a six-game winning streak, their longest ever such spell.

The next team trying to stop that will be Empoli, who actually beat Roma in the reverse fixture and are just two points behind in the Serie A table.

Empoli’s form has taken a turn for the worse since the turn of the year, much the opposite of Roma. Sunday’s opponents have lost four of their five games in all competitions in 2021.

Most recently, they played three games in a row against Juventus, with a league encounter sandwiched between two legs of a Coppa Italia quarter-final. They lost all three of those matches, with the latter being a 5-0 drubbing.

Roma learned that Empoli cannot be taken lightly in the reverse fixture, though. This game will be another measure of how much the Giallorosse have progressed since then.

It could be a memorable day for full-back Angelica Soffia, who is one game away from her 50th appearance for the club. It could also see Rachele Baldi playing against her former side, although Camelia Ceasar is perhaps more likely to start in goal.

Roma are looking to preserve their unbeaten record at home this season. It has been 12 games since Bavagnoli’s side last lost on their own turf, and there is no reason to change that trend now.

The game kicks off at 11:30am UK time on Sunday.
