Roma v Cagliari preview: Sergio Oliveira in line for debut

Roma will be hoping it is third time lucky as they chase a first win of 2022, with Cagliari visiting Stadio Olimpico on Sunday evening.

It has been a tough return from the winter break, with frustrating defeats to AC Milan and Juventus. Now, the challenge shifts to one against a team of a lesser stature.

Cagliari are currently in the relegation zone, but unlike Roma, they have started the new calendar year well with consecutive wins.

However, the opponents are dealing with a few Covid-19 cases at present, depriving them of some players. Roma, on the other hand, can call upon a new face in January signing Sergio Oliveira for the first time. Furthermore, Gianluca Mancini and Rick Karsdorp can return from suspension – but Ainsley Maitland-Niles is likely to keep his place at right-back anyway.

Suspended this time around, though, are Roger Ibanez and Bryan Cristante. Stephan El Shaarawy is also in doubt due to physical concerns, as is Chris Smalling.

Roma won the reverse fixture 2-1 back in October thanks to goals from Ibanez and Lorenzo Pellegrini.

This game kicks off at 5pm UK time and will be live on BT Sport 1.
