Roma must return their focus to Serie A for what is probably their toughest remaining league fixture this season on Monday, away to Fiorentina.
On a high after reaching the Europa Conference League final, Roma are one win away in that competition from both ending their trophy drought and qualifying for next season’s Europa League.
But they could get back into UEFA’s secondary tournament via the league route still, sitting sixth in Serie A with three games to go.
The first of those is against another side who have ambitions of playing in continental competition in 2022-23. Fiorentina are just three points behind Roma in eighth. Therefore, this direct encounter will be pivotal for both sides – especially with fellow European hopefuls Lazio and Atalanta both winning over the weekend.
Now, it is time for either Roma or Fiorentina to respond on the pitch with a result of their own. If the visitors can win, they would return to fifth place.
Fiorentina v Roma team news
For Roma, Tammy Abraham could make his 50th appearance for the club, becoming just the second Englishman to do so after fellow possible starter, Chris Smalling.
Jose Mourinho may make some changes to the lineup that beat Leicester on Thursday, but is not expected to overhaul his selections completely.
As for the opponents, midfielder Gaetano Castrovilli and right-back Alvaro Odriozola are unavailable. However, they have no other major concerns for coach Vincenzo Italiano to deal with.
That squad is on a four-game losing streak, though, so Roma – although without a league win in just under a month themselves – could further pull away from them by condemning them to a fifth. Anything like the reverse fixture, which Roma won 3-1 in August for Mourinho’s first home league match, will do.
The game kicks off at 7:45pm UK time and will be live on BT Sport 1.
