2017-18 Roma review: The awards

The time has come to finally draw a curtain on Roma’s 2017-18 season, with the selection of the Giallorossi Yorkshire awards.

Which players and moments have been singled out for extra praise? Do you agree with the winners? Have a look at the eight awards listed below.

Signing of the Season – Aleksandar Kolarov

Brought in for his experience and quality for just €5m, Kolarov hit the ground running as soon as he arrived at Roma from Manchester City. He made an immediate impact in the left back role, making the position his own with his impressive displays. His clever free kick against Atalanta on the opening day helped give his side three points, and showed how he can think ahead of his opponents. His strong character has also contributed to Roma’s successes this season.

Young Player of the Season – Cengiz Under

Another summer 2017 arrival, Cengiz Under showed what the hype was about in 2017-18 with a string of world class goals. In general, the team were over-reliant on Edin Dzeko to beat opposing goalkeepers during the season, but in the New Year, Under took responsibility and often got on the scoresheet himself. Still only 20, and despite not speaking Italian yet, he has made a big impact in his first season with the club.

Old Player of the Season – Aleksandar Kolarov

Some people doubted whether or not Kolarov could’ve consistently been Roma’s first choice left back at his age, but he played so well that he ensured he was always one of the first names on the teamsheet. He barely missed a game, testament to his fitness and competitive spirit. The 32-year-old could’ve used a rest at some points in the season, but that’s an indication of how hard he was working for the team. He refused to let his teammates down.

Most Improved Player – Cengiz Under

The young winger had a season of two halves, making fans wait until 2018 to see his true ability. He didn’t get many opportunities towards the start of the season, but upon the turn of the year, Eusebio Di Francesco began to entrust him with starts. Under repaid the coach’s faith, turning heads with his long-range wonder goals. The exciting thing is, Cengiz still has some more things to improve on – meaning he can become an even more exciting player in the future.

Most Consistent Player – Alisson Becker

Some Roma players went through patches of sublime form and periods of less success. Stephan El Shaarawy and Diego Perotti immediately spring to mind. One player who could always be relied upon, however, was Alisson Becker. The goalkeeper barely made any mistakes throughout the season, and was always a calm presence between the posts. He just never had an off-day, meaning Roma were always in safe hands.

Italian Player of the Season – Daniele De Rossi

De Rossi made his experience and passion for the shirt count again in 2017-18. In his first season as club captain, De Rossi led by example, and made sure he had a part to play in Roma’s best nights. For example, taking the penalty in the second leg against Barcelona, to make it 2-0, required nerves of steel. De Rossi stepped up when it mattered, helping to send Roma to the Champions League semi finals, and proved himself to still be the beating heartbeat of the club.

Goal of the Season – Edin Dzeko vs Chelsea (volley)

Was it really going to be anything else? Roma have scored some great goals over the season, but Edin Dzeko’s left-footed volley against Chelsea was something special. Thibaut Courtois had virtually no chance of stopping the thunderbolt, a goal made even more beautiful by the inch-perfect assist from Federico Fazio. It has been described as the best goal of Dzeko’s career, and perhaps even one of the best goals in Roma’s history. And deservedly so – this goal was from another planet.

Player of the Season – Alisson Becker

When it counted this season, Alisson was always there. He pulled off a countless number of unbelievable saves, playing a pivotal role in Roma’s success in Serie A and the Champions League. He has been so impressive, that many have proclaimed him to be the best goalkeeper they have seen in a Roma shirt. The levels of appreciation he has gained is reflective of his immense ability. This season, Alisson propelled himself right among the top five goalkeepers in world football.

Congratulations to all the 2017-18 Giallorossi Yorkshire award winners, for their efforts in helping the team succeed throughout the season. These players have stood out for their ability and passion, and have given their all for the Roma shirt. The season may be over, but these players have provided moments that will live long in the memory of Roma supporters. Here’s to many more next season.
